The "knitted comforts" are finished

I made a bag mitten for an injured hand
and a cap to wear with steel helmet

The knitters were asked to write a label
and say why they had made each item.
I made mine in memory of two family members killed in WW1
Francis Edward Charles Hall and William Wardle Colling Hall

My mam made a short neck helmet
and a boot for an injured foot.
She was evacuated during WW2 and remembered
ladies knitting for the war effort
and her mother making items for my uncle
who fought and was a prisoner of war in Italy

I've really enjoyed this project
and am looking forward
to seeing photos of the full display
by Jilly Evans at
Solent Showcase Art Gallery in Southampton

Rosemary

Its time to cut back
some of the plants in pots
in time for the new growth in spring

Comforts

My mam and I have volunteered
to help with this project
by artist Jilly Evans in Southampton.

This is her description of the installation

"By making a memorial of ‘knitted comforts’ I aim to both highlight the often hidden role of women in times of conflict and also show that soldiers, sailors and airmen were individuals and were loved.

I am creating a project called Knitted Comforts, which is going to be part of the
Right Here: The City as Muse show at Solent Showcase Gallery from 27th March – 9th May 2015"

Everything will be made in 100% wool
from an original pattern book.

I have started with a
bag mitten for an injured hand

We have been singing some wartime songs as we knit

Another new craft to try - weaving.

I bought this tiny kit from
Twill Textile Design in NZ
this is the link to Karuna's Etsy shop

The tiny loom is a beautiful object on its own!

I really enjoyed learning about
the warp and the weft
and found weaving a very relaxing thing to do

I made a little round thing!

#twelve

I've been feeling a bit off colour lately
so number twelve was a little something that was
soothing and easy on the brain

A case for some of my hooks and needles

Inspired by my crochet buddies
Michelle and Jane
and the lovely Karen down in Bristol
who are all trying new things,
I decided to give Tunisian crochet a go.

It is a strange technique
as you take up the loops onto the hook
in one direction and
unhook them in the other.
I don't think you could make anything very wide
as the hook would be too small.

It gave a thick, woven texture
to the case which is ideal
as the hooks won't fall through.

I enjoyed it but don't think
I'll use that technique again soon.
